Sensei Michael Katayanagi holds the rank of sixth degree (Rokudan) black belt with the International Shotokan Karate Federation (ISKF). He has been training in karate and other martial arts for over 56 years. He holds black belts in Moo Duk Kwan Tae Kwon Do (California) and Shindo Jinen Ryu (Tokyo,Japan) and has trained extensively in Ed Parker's American Kenpo Karate.
His instructor is Shihan Hiroyoshi Okazaki, 9th dan, Chairman of the ISKF. He is a graduate of the ISKF Instructor Training Program and a Senior Examiner and Tournament Official. In addition to serving on the Black Belt Dan Exam grading board at the ISKF world headquarters in Philadelphia, Sensei Katayanagi officiates at ISKF regional, national and international tournaments and formerly competed in the Senior Kata division. He is the former ISKF Treasurer and member of the US Board of Directors and the International Board of Governors.
He has been teaching Shotokan Karate in Nassau County (Sea Cliff, Great Neck and Port Washington) and Queens (Whitestone) for over 32 years and has enjoyed teaching students from beginning White Belts to Black Belts. He is a retired Director of Bank of America/Merrill Lynch and holds an MBA degree from Adelphi University.
